Open Carry Is My Right!

March 11, 20232 min read

Constitutional Carry in Florida is so close to passing.  Some people are for it, and some are not.  Some of those who are, however, are not happy that Open Carry isn't part of the proposed law.

What's the big deal?

If passed, the law would allow Florida residents 21 and over to carry a firearm concealed without a permit.  The new law does not allow for open carry.

The most common argument those in favor of Open Carry have is that it's their constitutional right.  Period.  They should not have to ask permission to exercise a right that the constitution; the Supreme law of the land already allows for.

Well, it doesn't work that way, and, IMO, that's not a bad thing.  Here is why:

1. When FL Constitutional Carry passes, it will not require an application process to carry a firearm concealed.  That's more than we had before.  We can always push for more through the legislative process.

2. Not everyone is in favor of guns, let alone seeing them all over the place in plain sight.  There's no need to rub it in to make a point.  We all have to live together.

3. It will not make someone a better shooter or more capable of defending oneself.  The laws still apply, and ignorance is still not an acceptable legal defense. To be safe and responsible, training in both firearm skills and gun laws should be a top priority.

4. Those who didn't think of carrying a gun with a permit will likely not start now.  Open or otherwise.

5.  Evil people will do evil no matter the law.  Good people will not, whether they carry a firearm or not.

Constitutional Carry has not proven to increase gun violence committed by law-abiding citizens.  If that was the case, I don't believe so many states would allow Constitutional Carry.

Whichever side of the debate you sit on, making the best of the situation is what's called for.  And since guns are not going away, learning to become safe, responsible, and lawful with them is, IMO, the most productive course of action.

At Executive Gun, we respect everyone's right to choose whether they want to own and/or carry a firearm.  Be it for recreation or protection.  In fact, many of our students were not fans of guns when they started.  However, the unrest and violence in recent years have got them to reconsider.  That can be hard when you believe a certain way for so long. And, in the beginning, firearms can be intimidating.

We understand that.  That's why our classes are designed to be interactive, challenging, and most importantly, a ton of fun; no matter your experience.  Just read our reviews and see what our students are saying.
