a gated community with the gate closed

Barbarians At The Gates

How rich do you have to be to be, and how gated does your gated community need to be to have guaranteed safety inside your home?

In September of 2014, Jill Halliburton Su; yes, the Halliburton oil empire Jill Halliburton Su was resting at her home in Davie FL. Jill and her husband just returned from a trip to Asia.  They lived in a beautiful home in a gated community with high security.

Unfortunately for Jill, it wasn't safe enough.  A 21 year old intruder managed to infiltrate the gated community and was robbing multiple homes there.  One of those homes was Jill's, and she was there resting after the long flight.  When Jill saw him, she tried to run, but he caught up with her, tied her up, put her in the bathtub, and brutally stabbed her 26 times.

She left behind a husband and son.

If you've been following me long enough, you've heard me share several stories of violent attacks occurring in affluent neighborhoods that are supposed to be "safe" and where people still live with the "it will never happen here" syndrome.

There are certainly advantages to living in an affluent neighborhood.  More security is one of them, but as Jill's case and many like it prove, is that more security doesn't guarantee safety.  Affluent neighborhoods have more to offer to criminals.  Yes, there is a greater chance of getting caught, but like any other business transaction, the greater the risk, the greater the potential reward, and many perpetrators are willing to kill for it.

Now, living in fear isn't the answer.  Living prepared is.  Violence has no borders. Criminals and the mentally ill don't play by the same rules.

The bad news is that as law-abiding citizens, we have to play by the rules. We do not initiate attacks but rather have to be prepared to react.  Criminals get to decide where and when the attack occurs.  We... are always starting at a disadvantage.

The good news is... If we are trained and prepared, we can dominate and survive a violent attack.  And, if we do so responsibly and lawfully, unlike a criminal, we get to go home to our families too.

Jill, unfortunately, was not trained nor prepared. She relied on the false sense of security her affluent gated community was supposed to provide.  She had no training, no plan, and no second chance.

Jill's killer underwent two trials.  One ended in a mistrial. The second, in a murder conviction.  Maybe her husband and son got justice and closure, but I dare say that if they had a second chance, they'd be better trained and prepared and have Jill back in that chair reading her book.  What would you rather have?

If what happened to Jill happened to you, would the outcome be any different?
