"Has the jury reached a verdict?"
"Yes, your honor."
"Please read the verdict for all to hear."
"Yes, your honor. In the case of the people vs. Joe Clown, we the jury find the defendant GUILTY beyond a reasonable doubt on the charge of first degree Stupidity."
If stupidity was a crime, there would be more jails than residential homes. We're all guilty of doing stupid things and are guilty on multiple counts.
But for gun owners, especially in today's environment, stupidity has become a valuable weapon, too... For prosecutors.
If you're a gun owner and spend time on social media, especially if you comment and interact, everything you say or write will be used against you if you ever stand trial.
Bravado comments like "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6", "I'd smoke his ass", and "I'll turn him into a holey man, yet" among others will be a delightful schmogesboard of evidence a prosecutor will use to discredit you and your actions should you be unfortunate enough to stand trial.
I'm confident that most of us have heard it said that we should not say or write anything, especially on social media, that we don't want displayed on a billboard in the main square or front page news. It is as smart a piece of advice anyone can heed. Even more so as gun owners.
You'd be better off spending your time and money attending training courses and studying your state and local laws and then sharing that knowledge with constructive comments. Comments that, should you find yourself in front of a jury, will help your case rather than derail it.
Start thinking like a prosecutor. Before you comment, ask yourself... Could a prosecutor use this against me?
Becoming a safe and responsible gun owner isn't just about being safe and proficient in the use of a firearm. It is just as much about understanding the immense responsibility that comes with it and having the proper knowledge. The right choice of words is part of it.
