Robo Dispatch: "9-1-1 What's your emergency?"
You: "Please send help quickly to 321 Mockinbird Lane in SafeTown. Please hurry!"
Robo Dispatch: "Yes, Sir. Help will be there in a few minutes. Hang in there."
You: "A few minutes? There are 3 robbers with guns in my living room now..."
Robo Dispatch: "Well, Sir, we just unplugged our RoboCops and Self-driving cruisers and programmed them to head over to your location. They'll be there as soon as robotically possible. Please sit tight. Please enjoy a selection of our greatest hits until help arrives."
Is this the future of law enforcement? I believe it will become a significant part of it in the not so distant future.
In my opinion, artificial intelligence will play a significant role in law and order. It's a scary thought and one I urge you not to ignore. It will greatly impact our safety and our ability to protect ourselves and our families.
Here is why...
1. Artificial intelligence and robotics will be replacing a significant amount of the workforce. As more people who lack the education and skillset necessary to navigate in a digital world become unemployed and desperate, crime will increase significantly.
That will happen far faster than AI and robotics reinforcing law enforcement. Which means, more criminals and crime will overwhelm an already short-handed police force.
2. Even if Robocops are available to help, doesn’t mean they will appear like a genie the moment an attack occurs. When seconds count, they'll still be minutes away.
3. Even when they get to a crime scene to apprehend the criminals, will they be sophisticated enough, in the early stages of the AI law enforcement revolution, to distinguish between the criminals and the victims before shots are fired?
We could go on, but the objective here is to help you recognize that no matter what innovation throws at us, we are still solely responsible for our own safety and the safety of those we love.
We will always be our own first responders. Help, in whatever form it comes, will come after the fact and still provides no guarantees.
Artificial Intelligence may be amazing. However, for every law abiding citizen who thinks so, there is a criminal either thinking the same thing, or a new one being forced into a life of crime because of it.
I am not suggesting we live in fear. There is no point in that since the future will unfold anyway.
I hope none of my predictions are true, but if they are, I prefer to be prepared. To have the skills, tools, knowledge, and mindset to deal with potential threats and protect myself and my loved ones should they show up at our door.
